A Panniculectomy is a procedure that removes a pannus. A pannus refers to an abnormal growth of skin that forms a large abdominal flap descending over the thighs and genitalia. This is not the typical type of sagging skin that may come from pregnancy or mild weight loss. A pannus is often the result of extreme weight loss of 100 pounds or more and is a common complication of procedures such as gastric bypass or gastric sleeve surgery.
A Panniculectomy is similar to a Tummy Tuck in that excess skin and tissue are removed from the lower area of your tummy. However, unlike a Tummy Tuck, the abdominal muscles are not tightened. A Panniculectomy is usually performed for functional reasons–rashes, infections, ulcers, and hygiene issues. Unlike a Tummy Tuck, a functional Panniculectomy may be covered by your insurance.
A Panniculectomy can also be performed along with a Tummy Tuck procedure if it is found that your abdominal muscles need tightening.
Colorado Springs Plastic Surgeon Dr. Millicent Geers will help you determine which procedure is the right fit for you during your personalized consultation.
After weight loss from routine exercise or weight loss surgery, patients may experience an excess amount of loose skin and tissue around the abdominal region. The excess skin can also lead to rashes, irritation, and sometimes odor due to moisture.
You may be a good candidate for Panniculectomy if you have the following factors:
This procedure is generally an outpatient surgery. Dr. Geers requires that you have a responsible adult stay with you for a few days after Panniculectomy to help with your daily activities. There should be no heavy lifting or strenuous activities for at least six weeks after surgery.
After the procedure you will experience some pain and discomfort due to swelling and bruising from the surgery. Your stitches may be removed after a week while interior stitches dissolve over time.
Complete recovery will take a few months. You will have several follow-up appointments with Dr. Geers to monitor your progress and to ensure long-lasting, pleasing results.
Patients tend to be happy with their results, and on average experience a five to ten pound weight loss–Dr. Geers’ Panniculectomy patient weight loss record is 14 pounds! Patients may also experience an improvement when it comes to overall physical health and hygiene.
