Areola Reduction

Areola Reduction is an elective cosmetic procedure to alter the overall appearance of the areola. The areola consists of hyperpigmented skin around the nipple. The size and color of the areola varies from individual to individual. Changes in areola shape and color over time occur due to age, weight changes, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. The goal of Areola Reduction is to change the shape, size, or position of the areola on the breast. The surgery involves the strategic removal of skin around and within the areola area for better shape and positioning on the breast.

Who Makes An Ideal Candidate For This Procedure?

The ideal patient for an Areola Reduction procedure is an individual seeking to improve the appearance of their areola due to increased size, an oblong or oval shape, and or puffiness. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or want to breastfeed in the future, then you are currently not an ideal candidate for areola surgery. If you are seeking to correct large nipples or nipple inversion, then this procedure is not the recommended treatment. To address these issues, Nipple Reduction and Inverted Nipple Surgery are the ideal procedures, respectively.

Reasons for an Areola Reduction

When it comes to breast surgery, emphasis is usually placed on breast enhancing procedures such as breast augmentation or breast lift. However, addressing the shape and size of the nipple and areola can create a more aesthetically pleasing breast.

Puffy areolas (sometimes miscalled puffy nipples) are typically caused by breast tissue pushing the areolas forward. This condition can be seen in tuberous breasts, a genetic condition in which the base of the breast is narrowed and the inframammary fold or breast crease is high up on chest wall creating an elongated, tubular appearance to the breast. Puffy areolas can be addressed with Areola Reduction surgery with or without an accompanying breast lift or reduction.

One areola may be larger than the other, in which case Dr. Millicent Geers would reduce the size of the larger areola to match the smaller areola, making them more symmetrical.

The border of an areola is typically circular. However, in some cases they may be oval or abnormally shaped. Areola surgery can be performed to make them appear more circular.

Recovery & Results

Recovery

Patients typically experience about a week of acute recovery following Areola Reduction. Most patients return to work within a few days. It is recommended that heavy activity should be avoided for around 6 weeks.

Results

The result of Areola Reduction is permanent enhancement to the overall appearance of your areola. Of course, subsequent changes from aging, weight fluctuation, and future pregnancy or breastfeeding will affect your result. You can see the final results immediately, however final healing will occur around the one-year mark as the body adapts to the changes and the scars become more faded.
